What is your role at Green17?

I have the best of both worlds here at Green17, working in a hybrid role that spans both development and support. This means I get to collaborate with the entire team regularly and interact with many of our clients. It’s been a fantastic way to settle into the role quickly over the past six months.

What’s your background, and how did it lead you to this role?

My background is actually in music - I completed a PhD in composition at Queen’s University Belfast and spent over seven years as the music director of my local church. However, a couple of years ago, I decided to pivot my career towards software development.

At first glance, this might seem like a big leap, but in reality technology has always played a significant role in my work. From using music software in my studies to implementing digital solutions during the pandemic in my church role, I found myself increasingly drawn to tech. That experience reinforced my desire to make software development my full-time career.

Looking back over the past six months, what’s been your favourite project to work on?

One of the most rewarding projects I’ve worked on so far is an ongoing project that digitises a complex paper-based process. It involves handling data and form submissions between three different parties, replacing a time-consuming manual workflow with an efficient electronic system.

This project has challenged me in the best ways - pushing me to problem-solve and refine my skills in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

What do you enjoy most about being part of the Green17 team?

One of the biggest advantages of working at Green17 is the close-knit nature of our team. Being part of a smaller group allows us to see a project through from start to finish, which gives a real sense of purpose and contribution. Unlike being just another ‘cog in the machine’ as it were, you can see how your work fits into the bigger picture.

Oh, that and the complimentary drinks and snacks, of course!

When you’re not working, what do you like to do in your free time?

I have two young, energetic daughters who keep me on my toes! When I do get some free time, I love playing board games with my wife and other close friends.

I also still enjoy being involved in music at my church, though now in a voluntary capacity. Music remains an important part of my life, even as I build my career in software.

What are you most excited about in the next six months at Green17?

I’m eager to continue building on the knowledge I’ve gained so far. One of the things that drew me to software development was the opportunity for continuous learning. I’m particularly excited about deepening my understanding of both front-end and back-end technologies and tackling more challenging projects.

Every day at Green17 brings a chance to grow, and I can’t wait to see what’s next! 🚀
